Each sport has its own rules. The rules help the game to proceed properly and avoid some negative plays from players. Among popular sports these days, baseball is one of the most complicated games because of its rules. Remembering and following all the disciples is a task of challenge not only for beginners but also with professional players so as to avoid making mistakes. These are some essential things you might need to know before participate in a real baseball match so that at least you can have a look at how baseball works.
What Is Baseball? How Can I Begin With It?
Basically, baseball is a name of a popular sport played by people all around the world regardless of gender and age. The players are divided into 2 teams. There are 2 stance of play: offense – the side hits the ball to score points and defense – the side tries their best to catch the ball and prevent play from the other team to take their bases and score points. The role is alternated between two teams.
The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible when playing offense and prevent the other team doing so when playing defense. The field has 4 bases, which is used to mark the infield and the outfield. The player has to run around to those bases staring from base number 1 in a circular route and end up in Home base. Completing a full run gives 1 point for the team.
Obviously, both teams have to try their best to achieve the victory of the game, especially professionals who play this sport in Leagues.
Some Equipment Needed For A Baseball Game
There are two different play styles in this game and both teams have to play them in turns, so they have to prepare 2 sets of equipment.
With players who play defense, they need to prepare a glove to catch the ball. You should pay attention to the quality and the size of the glove so as to avoid accidents and injuries to the hands and the wrists while playing.
Offense players need a bat – which can be made of wood or metal to hit the ball. The size and the material of the bat depend on the body size of the player and also his arm strength. That’s why many players are famous for their powerful and skillful hits.
Last but not least, the most important part of the game – the baseball. It’s a three – inch – ball painted in white with 2 lines seamed in red. The baseball is thrown and hit and is considered the proof of the point in this game.
The Basic Rules Of A Baseball Match
• The Fields
Basically, the baseball field is divided into 2 separate parts by the bases. 4 bases together from a square area called INFIELD. This area is covered with soil. The remaining part is called the OUTFIELD covered by grass. The fields are places in diamond shape and outside the outfield are fenced and it is the foul area. The ball hit to those territory is not counted to the game. That’s why batters need to aim carefully before batting so as not to waste a batting turn.
• The Positions Of Defense Players
Pitcher – who throw the ball to the batter will stand on the high ground in the middle of the infield and face the home plate where the catcher sit and wait for the ball to come and not being hit. On each base, there is a defender who tries to stop the runner of the offense team. The shortstop is a special position that stands between the second base and the third base to strengthen the lineup. The outfield is guarded by 3 players called outfielders. They have to catch the ball that are hit far from the infield and throw it back to their teammates to run the game.
• How It Works?
The game consists of 9 innings in pro Leagues and sometimes it’s 6 in low level matches. Each inning has 2 half. The visiting team begins with the first half of the inning and play offense while the home team play defense. After that, the roles are swapped between 2 team and the game is continued. That’s why the players have to be strong, fast and skillful to play the whole long game. Each time there are 3 “outs” according to the referees, the turn of a team ends and begin the second half of the inning.
• The Offense Side
With nine players in each team, there would be a lineup before the match. This lineup is placed in order to show the batting orders. It has a huge meaning to the team strategy. The first batter will stand in the batting box in front of the home base and wait for the ball to be pitched toward. If the batter hits the ball and it’s not caught before hitting the ground, the batter would be able to run as fast as possible to the bases.
If the batter can run and touch the base before the ball is sent back to the baseman, the batter can stay there and the hit list is continued with the next one. It depends on the batter how many bases he can run through as long as he can touch the base before the baseman holding the baseball.
The batter is strike if he misses the ball or the ball is coughed in the middle of its fly. Once there are 3 batters out, the turn is over and the role is switched between teams.
